Nikon D800 Autofocus Accuracy: 85/1.8G + 85/1.4G + Mosaic Target
I have updated my Nikon D800 review to include more autofocus analysis.
The mosaic AF-S example now has both the 85/1.4G and 85/1.8G and the Rodin fine-focus adjust example shows which focus sensor was used.
See my Nikon gear page for D800 availability status.

I found your observations about the D800's focusing accuracy to be interesting, but not at all surprising. I've owned several D700's, and all of them performed about the same as what you're seeing with the D800. My Canon 5D Mark II's, much maligned in the various internet forums for their supposed inability to focus, were easily an order of magnitude more reliable in focus accuracy.
DIGLLOYD: I’m not prepared to comment on Canon vs Nikon as yet in the focusing area, though as I show in my case studies in Making Sharp Images, Canon AF has consistency (precision in the scientific sense) problems also, at least with the EF 35/1.4L.
As for image quality, the D800 has no Canon peer.
