Fresh Look at the Leica SL

See my Leica SL wish list at B&H Photo.

The Leica SL is showing up shortly for “round 2”. Now that the firmware has fixed some bugs (including a focusing bug I reported to Leica, and which Leica fixed), I want to take a fresh look at the SL to see how it performs against prior issues.

A key intention is to study the image quality on the Leica M240 versus the Leica SL with particular attention to wides: the 18/3.8 Super-Elmar-M, 21/3.4 Super-Elmar-M, 24/3.8 Elmar-M, 28/2 Summicron-M (pre-2016 since I don't have the 2016 version).

Is the Leica SL is a drop-in replacement platform for the M240? That is, in terms of image quality along with a far superior EVF and improved sensor? That’s what I want to know since I have a bunch of M lenses for my M240. The EVF is critical to my use, so this is a question I want answered definitively, if ony for my own consideration—is it the right upgrade path.

Also on the agenda for Leica SL evaluation is the Zeiss ZM 35mm f/1.4 Distagon, which may be the best all-around lens for Leica M.
