Nikon D810
AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED

Aperture Series: Glacial Erratic To Peak (D810)

This lens rendering series show real world performance on a near-to-far scene.

Glacial Erratic To Peak, late day

ACR 8.7 (287): ACR settings, Camera Profile = Camera Portrait

Diffraction-mitigating sharpening was used for the f/9, f/13, f/16 frames as per Mitigating Micro Contrast Losses from Diffraction Blur in Making Sharp Images.

Focus is on the large glacial erratic at right with the white stripe, leaving the background out of focus to start. Imaging performance is very satisfactory at f/1.8 and f/2 for a 20mm lens, but it is f/2.8 that really delivers high quality over much of the frame. Outer areas lag by 1-2 stops: stop down to f/4 for strong results, with f/5.6 for peak results. After that, it’s about depth of field, with a very large near-to-far gain seen at f/9, which is just about the ideal aperture for a 36 megapixel camera (strong depth of field, diffraction effects still mild).

Diglloyd DAP is DSLR-oriented, but also contains workflow and other topics. Much of the focus is on Canon and Nikon but also Pentax and Pentax medium format.

Special emphasis is placed on lens evaluation, focusing on Canon and Nikon and Sigma lenses, but with a few others like Rokinon/Samyang.

  • Make better images by learning how to get the best results right away.
  • Save money by choosing the right lens for your needs the first time, particularly some of the new Sigma Art lenses vs Nikon and Canon.
  • Workflow discusses image organization, raw conversion and post processing. Many examples show processing parameters for direct insight into how the image was converted.
  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
