Introduction

Updated: May 11, 2008

What camera settings are most useful? The defaults are generally quite reasonable, but over the years we’ve settled on a preferred set which might be a better start for some users than the factory-default ones. Highlights:

  • RAW (EOS) and/or RAW+JPEG (Nikon D3) at highest quality;
  • Playback settings for the most useful information without too much clutter;
  • Focus priority.
  • “My menu” settings containing our most frequently-used settings.

Users with specific needs (eg sports shooting) will still need to experiment with what works best for them with regards to focusing tracking, shutter or focus priority, etc.
