When selling a digital camera, savvy buyers will ask how many shutter actuations a camera has; this is like asking what the mileage is on an automobile. Shutter actuations is one of the numerous tidbits of information stored in RAW or JPEG files produced by digital cameras.
There are a number of standard fields stored with digital images (“EXIF” info), as well as may fields specific to each brand and even model. Standard fields include shutter speed, aperture, focal length, etc.These are displayed by many image processing programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Aperture, the various RAW-file converters, etc. But most such programs display only some of the data, or display it in a modal dialog, provide no means to copy it as plain text, etc.
So when your needs go beyond the basics, there are powerful tools that let you get at all the available information very quickly once you understand how to use them. These tools also allow automation and batch-processing (scripting) capabilities. One such tool is Phil Harvey’s ExifTool.
Using ExifTool
First, download and install ExifTool. After installation, open a Terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.App).
You will need to use the command (“change directory”). Below I’ve done a to a directory on a CompactFlash card in my card reader (directory /Volumes/Nikon D200/DCIM/160ND20). Note that directories (folders) with spaces in their names eg “Nikon D200” must be enclosed using quotes, or the "\" character must preceed any space in the name.

For the four commands shown above, one could also just type:

Next I’ve done an (“list”) with the option (details). This shows all the files in the current directory, along with their permissions, owners, sizes, dates and name. The filename (only) is needed to dump the file information (metadata).

But all the preceeding is really leading up to what we’re after: the detailed information found in each file. To see the information on one image, you’ll type , where is the name of the file. This will output everything there is to know about the file (its metadata), including shutter actuations (“Shutter Count”).

There seems to be no “Shutter Count” field for the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III. It is almost certainly hidden elsewhere in the binary data (a Canon-proprietary field). Contact us if you know the answer.
Note also that some information could be misleading; uncompressed 14-bit RAW (CR2) file shown here is presumably not Bits Per Sample of 8 8 8.
The “Camera Type” field is amusing: “EOS High-end”.

Conclusions
The detailed metadata in digital images is only of passing interest, but some items can actually be useful (such as shutter actuations when buying a used camera). There might also be reasons to be able to extract it for cataloging purposes (documentary or news, etc); this is best done with a tool such as ExifTool.
