Expanding ZIP files on Windows

Introduction

This page shows how to extract the contents of a zip file on Windows XP. Other flavors of Windows should work in a similar manner, and Windows Vista might automate the process, depending on configuration.

Diglloyd reviews are provided in ZIP format for downloading, and the ZIP file must be turned into an actual folder prior to reading the review.  A zip file ends in the suffix “.zip”.

The most popular program for unzipping ZIP files for Windows is WinZip.  A free evaluation version may be downloaded at http://winzip.com.

Background

Some users have attempted to read the review by double-clicking the ZIP file.  Windows XP obliges by presenting a window showing the contents of the ZIP file, which look like normal files.  They are not usable files, but just a convenient view of what’s inside the ZIP file.

Attempting to read the review while these files are still contained within the ZIP file will not work correctly;  links between pages will not work, images won’t load, etc.

Unzipping the ZIP file

First, locate the ZIP file you have downloaded. Its location will depend on how you configured your web browser and/or how where you saved the download.  For this example, we’ll use the ZIP file diglloyd_TheSharpestImage-v2.zip:

Next, right-click on the ZIP file.  You should see the Extract All… command:

NOTE: If you do not see Extract All…, you should double-click ”diglloyd_TheSharpestImage.zip” to view its contents [Windows XP only].  Drag the contents into a folder of your choosing and use those now-extracted copies to read the article.  Skip the remaining steps.

After choosing Extract All…, you should be presented with the Extraction Wizard window:

Click the Next > button. You should see Select a Destination. Pay attention to where you are saving the folder, and its name.  In this case we are saving the result in C:\ and the name of the folder will be diglloyd_TheSharpestImage-v2:

The extraction process will run to completion and you will see Extraction Complete.  Leave Show Extracted Files selected as shown and click Finish:

Windows will open the new folder that has just been created (in this particular case it is named diglloyd_TheSharpestImage-v2.  The appearance may vary, depending on how you have Windows™ configured.  Double-click on the folder to open it:

Within the folder you’ve just opened, double-click index.html to being reading the review.
