Welcome

The diglloydTools program is a command line interface (Terminal) application which in its first release contains two commands: run-stress-test, designed for maximally stressing a computer’s CPU, memory and disk subsystems, and test-compute-speed, a simple but predictive command for assessing a computer’s raw computing performance. Many more commands are planned for the future, to address a variety of tasks that are inconvenient or not readily feasbile with standard applications.

Although it is a command-line that runs in Terminal, double-clickable Finder icons are provided for those more comfortable with a graphical user interface. See the user manual for details.

Why would I want to use it?

Heat is the worst enemy of electronics, and run-stress-test gives you the most efficient way to heat up the memory, CPU and entire computer, by running it at maximum capacity.

If you’re planning on buying extra memory, particularly memory of dubious provenance, running a stress test is a good way to check if the new memory is going to work under heavy load. It will also give you a good indication of how loud the fans on the computer become under maximum load.

You simply cannot stress the machine with normal applications that way you can with diglloydTools. If there’s going to be a memory or system failure due to heat, diglloydTools will provoke it.

Save yourself the time and aggravation of sporadic problems, and learn up front whether that new memory works under heavy load, or not.

For most users, a test duration of one hour should be sufficient to provoke any latent problems.

How does diglloydTools work?

Please see the diglloydTools User Manual for complete details, and also the software license.

If a command-line interface makes you uncomfortable, please see Command Syntax Primer.

Utilized by performance-review site barefeats.com

The diglloydTools application has proven itself in recent testing of memory at barefeats.com. For now please refer to their Quick Takes page (September 1, 2006). Barefeats.com plans a full review of various memory modules.

What does it cost?

diglloydTools is available as a personal use license for $9.95 USD via PayPal.  Use is subject to the License Agreement.
