Leica 16-18-21mm f/4 Tri-Elmar-M ASPH

Flare and Sunstars

Shot on the 24-megapixel Leica M Typ 240.

Flare control with the Leica 16-18-21mm f/4 Tri-Elmar-M ASPH is excellent in terms of veiling flare, less so with ghosting flares; it is not as resistant to flare as the 18/3.8 SEM or 21/3.4 SEMwhicih is not unexpected since the Tri-Elmar has ten lens elements as compared to eight for the two primes in its range.

The Tri-Elmar controls veiling flare exceptionally well. Its main weakness is the generation of a large green ghosting flare when shooting into the sun. The 18/3.8 SEM and 21/3.4 SEM can be used with little concern for such ghosts (not entirely free from ghosts, but substantially lower in size and brightness than the Tri-Elmar).
