Leica 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux-M

Veiling Flare 50/0.95: Shaded and Unshaded

On Leica M Type 240. No filter was used and the lens shade was fully extended.

Stray light can come from any direction so it is very worthwhile to pay attention to all areas of the frame and block this stray light. Handheld this is awkward, but on a tripod it is straightforward using Live View to make the check for haze. The trick is with a 2-second self-timer to not wander the hand into the frame! Hence retries might be needed for angles very near a light source.

Examples at ∞ focus

The shading of the front element by the lens hood does not change with focus (distance between the front glass and lens shade is unaffected by focusing).

The goal here was to maximize flare: the camera was placed on a tripod, then was rotated and angled in order to achieve the visibly worst case flare without having the sun directly in the frame.
