Focusing and Focus Shift Mitigations

The various series taken with the Sony 16-35mm f/4 OSS show a pronounced focus shift. Thus understanding the focus shift behavior and camera settings is critical to getting the best out of the lens.

Mitigating focus shift

If shooting at f/5.6 or f/8, focus at the shooting aperture, either in manual focus mode or autofocus, ditto for f/11 and f/16.

However, stopping well down creates a source of ambiguity: it becomes increasingly difficult for either the human eye or the camera autofocus to distinguish the correct focus due to too much depth of field, and decreased brightness.

These behaviors are assumed to be identical on the A7s/A7/A7II/A7R/RX1R, but the user should confirm the camera behavior, particularly with firmware updates.
