Focusing and depth of field
To make a point of how thin depth of field is, according to EXIF info, the hyperfocal distance for the Olympus 300/4 at 1500m at f/4, 1071m at f/5.6 and 750m at f/8 (according to EXIF info). In practical terms this is fairly meaningless; at a kilometer away the atmospheric effects exert a strong influence on image quality.
Accordingly, focus exactly on the desired target, or forget about achieving sharpness. To this end, most examples in this review were focus manually, to ensure that exactly the desired element(s) were in peak focus. Particularly for flowers and similar this becomes very important as the AF system cannot know which portion of the subject to focus on.
