Voigtlander Nokton 42.5mm f/0.95

Aperture Series: Magenta Flower on Green

Shot with Olympus OM-D E-M1.

There was no observable air movement, so this series gives an excellent feel for how bokeh and depth of field develop with stopping down.

This series was also shot with the Panasonic Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 ASPH. They are not compared here because the Voigtlander has a slightly wider field of view and focus could not be matched well for this subject. It is worth viewing both series to gain a perspective on the similarities, and some differences. When comparing, use the same apertures, e.g., f/1.2 versus f/1.2.

Close range can be a weak area for many fast lenses. For example, the Nikon 58mm f/1.4G declines greatly in contrast and sharpness at close range. But having to “cover” a much smaller M4/3 sensor, the optical design considerations are easier, and hence the Voigtlander 42.5/0.95 has a good chance of delivering relatively high quality in spite of its fast (bright) aperture.
