A7s vs A7 vs A7R: Relative Image Sizes

The Sony A7s is a 12-megapixel camera. It’s helpful to understand the relative size of the images it produces versus the 24-megapixel Sony A7 and 36-megapixel A7R.

Resolving power (line pairs at specified contrast, e.g., detail) is a linear concept, not one of area. So while 24 megapixels is twice as large an image as 12 megapixels, the resolving power difference is 1.41X, assuming a lens can deliver the necessary resolution at similar contrast (unlikely); this gets down to per-pixel quality.

The higher resolution cameras demand high grade lenses focused perfectly with no shutter vibration or other technical issue to degrade their resolution. Moreover, peak resolution for a higher resolution camera is restricted to a much more shallow depth of field, so that the resolving power benefits exist in a relatively narrow zone of the image: on 3D images, going slightly out of focus means that the higher resolution camera is not higher resolution. Shot discipline and excellent technique come to the fore.
