Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM

Ergonomics

Zoom mechanism

The generously-sized zoom ring is well damped with a good feel. When zoomed from 24mm to 70mm, the lens body extends continually forward a full 25mm / one inch. Perhaps this simplifies the optical design, but operationally it makes it feel like a mid-grade consumer lens in spite of its otherwise excellent fit and finish. With the lens shade, it extends a full 7 1/2 inches from the grip, and about 8 1/2 inches / 185mm from the lens mount, dwarfing the camera. Elegant it is not.

Heft and feel

At nearly two pounds (890g), the 24-70/2.8 GM feels unpleasantly unbalanced on the Sony A7R II, lacking the appropriate feel of a Nikon or Canon DSLR with a 24-70 f/2.8. The Sony combination is awkward at best, and the right hand notices the torque on the grip unless the lens is supported by the left hand. One wonders about the lens mount, fortunately reinforced on the A7R II, but the original A7R surely is not a wise mating to the 24-70.
