Sony A7R II
Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-56 G OSS

Examples: White Mountains

These examples shot handheld in the White Mountains of California.

The shots at distance are particularly helpful in looking for lens symmetry issues which are definitely seen with this sample of the 70-300/4.5-5.6 G OSS.

Clearing storm

The air was free of dust, but there is always a bit of bluish haze over far distance with telephoto lenses, so a contrast bump was added to this image. Even so, it seems oddly low in overall contrast given the sparkling conditions.

Most of the image is razor sharp, but the left side has problems, as the crops make clear. This asymmetric performance is fairly common and was seen in a variety of other images taken with the Sony 70-300G OSS. Not that it is unique to Sony—on this same trip the far more expensive Leica 24-90mm f/2.8-4 has issues equally bad. Typically at different focal lengths or focusing distances the behavior can change.
