Sony A7R

Sony A7R Introduction

The November 2013 Sony Alpha A7R produces 36-megapixel 7360 X 4912 images from a full frame sensor, allegedly the same sensor as the Nikon D800, and like the D800E, without an anti-aliasing filter. But image quality is a sum total of sensor and electronics and stored file format.

The A7R uses a focal plane shutter which is among the loudest your author has ever used on on camera short of medium format, which naturally raises vibration concerns.

The sibling RX1 / RX1R fixed-lens cameras have a whisper-quiet in-lens leaf shutter with full flash speed sync—radically different. It’s a shame that the Sony/Zeiss lenses were not designed with leaf shutters so that the A7R could operate like the RX1R.
