Extreme Dynamic Range: Rainstorm Sunset at ISO 400 (RX1R)

Dynamic range in the field is best evaluated with real images made under real field conditions. That is, lab tests and by-the-numbers figures can set overall expectations but generally fail to measure the subjective character of noise (e.g., pattern or crosshatch noise seen in so many Canon DSLRs; that type of noise is very hard to deal with).

The best definition of usable dynamic range is how well the image integrity holds up during raw conversion and post processing. This often means push processing as well as opening up shadow areas and retaining highlight detail, all at the same time!

Raw conversion

Shown further below is a challenging situation which during raw conversion needed the dark areas raised in brightness and the highlights held in check (0.9 push with Highlights -70).
