Sony RX100

Conclusions: Kudos and the Lens

Based on many hundreds of examples taken in the field, and conversion from RAW to 16-bit wide gamut color, along with examining JPEG results.

The lens

The sensor is an exciting one to me because while noise is fairly high, the equivalent resolution in a full-frame DSLR is 148 megapixels. The sensor has lovely color and a high dynamic range, getting into quality DSLR territory in both respects.

It is the lens that is the limiting factor for resolution in every one of these images, so if Sony could produce (for example), a 28mm f/2 fixed lens model with a very high performing Zeiss lens, this camera could sing. Alas, the market does not demand optical quality, but rather high megapixels (what’s the point if the lens does not deliver?) along with stupidly slow aperture wide-range zooms with mediocre sharpness (though color and bokeh are lovely).
