Zeiss Loxia 50mm f/2 Planar

Distortion for Zeiss Loxia 50/2 Planar

Distortion of ~0.25% is very low for a 50mm lens, in most cases this means no need to correct it. Most manufacturers would term this “zero or near zero distortion”.

This level of distortion is far lower than the distortion of the Zeiss ZF.2 / ZE 50mm f/1.4 Planar (~2%) and about half the distortion of the Zeiss ZF.2 / ZE 50mm f/2 Makro-Planar (~0.5%). Also, it is only slightly more than the very best Leica M 50mm f/2 designs.

The low distortion is interesting in that the Zeiss ZM 50mm f/2 Planar shows distortion of about 1.5%, but the Loxia design reduces that by a factor of six or so, showing that the design has been modified versus the rangefinder design.
