Image Stabilization (IS) on a Tripod

Image stabilization (IS) aka vibration reduction (VR) can be a terrific feature, but it should always be disabled on a tripod, regardless of brand.

The risk is that IS will detect and attempt to correct vibrations caused by the shutter and/or simply not react correctly under stillness or near stillness.

As of 2015 testing by your author of many brands has not revealed any brand image stabilization that that can safely be used on a tripod.
