RAW vs mRAW: Sharpness, Tone, Color
Background: RAW vs mRAW / sRAW: Camera Cropping and Downsampling and File Size.
This comparison evaluates the use of full resolution raw format quality when downsampled to the same size as medium raw (mRAW); see also the sRAW comparison. The Canon 5DS R with the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon at f/9 was used for this scene.
Raw processing was the same as for all the other examples in this review, including very mild (minimal) compensation for diffraction at f/9 for the full resolution image (diffraction definitely not the issue for the smaller raw formats).
Camera inconsistencies
This scene was shot and reshot eight (8) times because several differences between RAW and mRAW/sRAW were seen, frustrating at first, then it become clear that it was the camera’s doing, and was not a change in (clear blue sky) lighting or any camera settings, etc: the camera does not produce consistent results between RAW, mRAW, sRAW in white balance and tint and brightness. Manual exposure, all noise reduction and other features disabled, no lens corrections, etc. Different every time the three were shot.
