Sample #6 @ 200mm

This page shows the performance at 200mm using sample #6, the best of 6 samples that I tested and that I now own as my personal copy. It shows the highest and most uniform sharpness throughout the frame, and offers excellent performance wide open at f/2.8. This is about as high a performance as you’re likely to observe with the 70-200/2.8L IS II.

Note that the there was a slight upward tilt to the camera; this means that the top and bottom are just barely out of the plane of focus. At this distance (~80 meters or so), the effect is very small, but it is a useful tool to help detect front or backfocus across multiple aperture series. Thus, the top and bottom results might be even a little better than the crops indicate.

Perseverance pays off —

The 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II gave me fits while testing it in March 2010, due to various optical problems documented in this review. The first four samples showed various issues.

Diglloyd DAP is DSLR-oriented, but also contains workflow and other topics. Much of the focus is on Canon and Nikon but also Pentax and Pentax medium format.

Special emphasis is placed on lens evaluation, focusing on Canon and Nikon and Sigma lenses, but with a few others like Rokinon/Samyang.

  • Make better images by learning how to get the best results right away.
  • Save money by choosing the right lens for your needs the first time, particularly some of the new Sigma Art lenses vs Nikon and Canon.
  • Workflow discusses image organization, raw conversion and post processing. Many examples show processing parameters for direct insight into how the image was converted.
  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
