Gigapan Epic Pro Ergonomics

This page covers the physical ergonomics of mounting the camera.

Size and weight

Between size and weight and tripod requirement, the Epic Pro is either “car equipment” (meaning you don’t go far from your car), or a dedicated outfit for which a particular packing arrangement will need to be devised.

The Gigapan Epic Pro weighs about 8 pounds with its large battery which fits into the base of the unit. Add in a suitably sturdy tripod and tripod head (~6- pounds), and it makes little sense to shoot this unit with a small camera; my feeling is that a 18+ megapixel DSLR or similar makes the most sense, given the ~15 pound overhead of shooting, plus the 5 pounds or whatever it takes for the DSLR and lens, bringing it to a realistic system weight of 20 pounds.

The Gigapan Epic Pro is also bulky enough that it won’t easily fit into a standard daypack for hiking (as I like to use). It will fit well enough into a full size camera backpack however, perhaps with some internal rearrangement of dividers and pads.
