Distortion is a prominent characteristic of the Nikon 24-120/4G VR. Even through the viewfinder, the world just looks warped, and this alone can make it difficult to align the camera with the subject unambiguously.
At 24mm, there is very strong barrel distortion, but it can be corrected in Nikon Capture NX2 using Distortion = 20. The Auto Distortion feature does not correct it more than partially.
