Conclusions

After using hundreds of lenses on various formats, and testing many of them, an unusually good lens is quickly evident. Setting aside the severe autofocus issues, documented here, the new Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.4G might be (optically) the finest 35mm lens I’ve yet used (setting aside the new Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 Distagon, which I’ve not yet received). Or at least it’s right up there with the very best.

But bad focus turns any lens into a dud, and that’s exactly what the 35/1.4G is when autofocus is used on my D3x or D3s.
