Autofocus Errors with Nikon D3x, D3s
The 12MP Nikon D3s also shows the same issues as seen here, so that shows that both an $8K and a $5K Nikon body can't focus the 35/1.4G properly, and rules out a camera body issue. I have also verified that the problem occurs at distance, and at 60/50/30/20/10 feet. Adding +10 fine focus adjustment to D3x gets it close, but further research shows that fine focus is not a solution.
These tests are with my December 2010 evaluation lens.
I had focus issues with the Nikon 24mm f/1.4G, so the first shot I took out my door with the 35mm f/1.4G was a quick but effective test of the 35/1.4G, shown below. Additional controlled tests show a very sharp lens but with consistent and horrendous autofocus error, as you can see for yourself from the examples on this page.
