Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G

Ergonomics

Build quality

The lens is built with the current Nikon plastics. There is some minor improvement here over the original 50/1.4D model, and it still says “Made in China” on the lens itself indicating the usual mass-market production. Nothing is engraved, all is plastic except the lens mount, and the distance scale is housed through a clear plastic window (scratch prone), in comparison to the fine workmanship of engraved numerals on the Zeiss ZF 50/1.4 Planar.

Neither Nikon nor Sigma can touch the “lifetime” anodized and engraved build of the Zeiss ZF/ZE series or the Voigtlander 58/1.4 Nokton (manual focus). A year or two or 10 years from now, the metal Zeiss/Voigtlander lenses will still ooze quality; the Nikon will look like the hunk of plastic it is. However, optical qualities come first for many, as does autofocus. At similar street prices, all are worthy choices.
