Context vs Nikon Normal Lenses

Nikon offers three AF-S normal lenses: the 50/1.4G, 50/1.8G and the 58mm f/1.4G.

Historically there were a variety of 50mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.8 AIS and non-AIS designs, all of which were good optics but not to the level of current designs and with lens coatings definitely not at current performance levels.

As well, there is the still in production 50mm f/1.2 AIS, a classic spherical design (no aspheric elements) having gobs of spherical aberration and focus shift; the 50/1.2 AIS lens should be used for those qualities which are technically inferior but nonetheless attractive for certain stylistic applications.
