Flare
The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II offers outstanding flare control in general, yet can be highly susceptible to veiling flare (haze) when light strikes the front lens element. These images all taken with the second (good) sample.
For this reason, the hood should be used at all times. When non-image-forming light strikes the front element, particularly sunlight, quite severe veiling flare can develop. Shooting towards the sun can cause very damaging flare, even to the extent of rendering the image unusable.
Yet the 70-200VR2 can also be shot into intense light source and perform extremely well. So it all depends on how light strikes the lens; sunlight that grazes the front of the lens is the worst case.
