Introduction

Read about the new Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II here.

Previously noted in Mush in the Corners, this special report addresses the unusually poor performance of the Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED, a lens whose day in the sun has long passed, now that full-frame cameras reveal just how poorly it performs outside the 2/3 “DX” frame when zoomed towards 200mm.

This report is not a full lens test; rather it is a targeted report addressing this highly unusual issue, of concern to many Nikon users that have begun using the full-frame Nikon D700 and D3 (as well as future models). The “oldy but goody” Nikon 180mm f/2.8 ED-IF is used for comparison purposes, because this is a reasonable alternative for most users (price, size, etc).
