ISO 3200 In the Forest

These examples, all shot in the space of an hour, show the insanely great noise and color of the Nikon D3s at ISO 3200 (mostly). Ambient temperature was approximately 50°F (temperature affects noise).

Worth noting is that the images taken on this page would not even be possible with the recently-reviewed Leica M9, which costs US$1800 more. Or if they could be made, would look really awful by comparison.

Choose your camera for what you like to do: the D3s is an anywhere-anytime-any-light camera, but it’s triple the size and weight of the Leica M9.

Presentation

I elected to present images on this page at 50% of actual pixels (2128 pixels wide), because this accurately suggests what one might see in a print. Many users will have to scroll to see the entire image, but I feel that the 50% size tells the story well. Get the NEC 30" if you want a bigger screen, heck, it’s only 40% of the cost of a D3s.

Diglloyd DAP is DSLR-oriented, but also contains workflow and other topics. Much of the focus is on Canon and Nikon but also Pentax and Pentax medium format.

Special emphasis is placed on lens evaluation, focusing on Canon and Nikon and Sigma lenses, but with a few others like Rokinon/Samyang.

  • Make better images by learning how to get the best results right away.
  • Save money by choosing the right lens for your needs the first time, particularly some of the new Sigma Art lenses vs Nikon and Canon.
  • Workflow discusses image organization, raw conversion and post processing. Many examples show processing parameters for direct insight into how the image was converted.
  • Jaw-dropping image quality found nowhere else utilizing Retina-grade images up to full camera resolution, plus large crops [past 2 years or so].
  • Real world examples with insights found nowhere else. Make sharper images just by understanding lens behavior you won’t read about elsewhere.
  • Aperture series from wide open through stopped down, showing the full range of lens performance and bokeh.
  • Optical quality analysis of field curvature, focus shift, sharpness, flare, distortion, and performance in the field.
