Field Comparison: D600 vs D800E (Saddlebag Overlook)

The results seen here are as precisely matched as I could possibly hope for in the field.

A complete aperture series from f/2 through f/16 was shot, but the optimal aperture of f/5.6 is shown here for the purpose of comparing the two cameras.

The results show about as much difference between 24 and 36 megapixels as one could hope for under ideal conditions. With lesser lenses, forget it— the differences will be close to nil when the lens does not deliver adequate micro contrast to the demanding D800E sensor.

Lens choice

The Zeiss 100mm f/2 Makro-Planar has few peers for its high micro contrast and resolving power. Even so, the Nikon D800E puts severe demands on it, and the 100/2 requires f/5.6 to show its best results, which is the aperture used here.
