The beauty of using tilt is that no resolution is lost to diffraction, and equally important, the entire bike can be sharp wide open at f/4.5, isolating it from its peers and making it appear even sharper by comparison to its out of focus brethren and the foreground and background.
Without tilt, it is simply not possible to make the bike sharp without also losing the separation of subject from its surroundings. Thus, tilt is a powerful tool for compelling results whenever the subject must be sharp, but also show clean separation from its surroundings.
For the frame below, I used the tilt (swing) function of the Schneider 90mm f/4.5 to run the plane of sharp focus from the front tire of the bike through its rear fender, focusing on the “AERO” logo. Whether I did this perfectly or not, I cannot say, but it looks awfully good.
