Shifted Image Quality

In the samples below, the five lenses were tested with the camera fixed on the tripod; the only change was switching the lens.   A variety of other subjects were photographed and checked for consistency with this example, which accurately reflects the performance to be expected from each model (with the caveat of sample variation).

On a full-frame camera (sensor/film of 36mm X 24mm), Nikon rates the 28mm PC-Nikkors for 11mm shift in the short direction and 8mm in the long direction.   The PC-Nikkors clearly denote this on the lens itself with a white dot and scale as the lens is rotated.   Schneider rates the PC Super Angulon for 11mm either horizontally or vertically and 9.5mm diagonally.

Those with full-frame cameras (such as the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II) should be aware that optical performance will decrease significantly beyond the 2/3-frame (23.7 X 15.7mm) sensor area of the D2X.  However, the full-frame-sensor cameras as of June 2005 do have larger pixels than the Nikon D2X, which demands less resolution from the lens; this factor mitigates the performance loss to a limited extent.
