Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO-Macro DG HSM

Performance at 1:1 (Doll Face, D800E)

The Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro DG HSM goes to 1:1 natively, allowing enough working distance over shorter macro lenses that natural illumination is still feasible.

This series is at 1:1. The lens was racked to its minimum focusing distance, the moved into focus and a final very small focus adjustment made. The eyes of the doll were rotated so that the iris of each was cut through by the plane of focus.

Depth of field is extremely limited at high magnifications, so the right questions might be:

At this range, maximum aperture (wide open) is f/5, as indicated by the Nikon D800E. This is a strong argument for an f/2.8 lens (as compared to an f/4 lens).
