Take an hour at dusk, and look for shapes and color. Skip the tripod (kills creativity), raise the ISO, and experiment.
I set myself a challenge of making some interesting images with about 30 minutes to go before it got really dark. I like exercises like this because the insights carry over into my regular photography.
