Shootout: Leica M9 vs Sony NEX

Leica M lenses on which body? Here we compare:

The difference between 16/18/24 megapixels in terms of resolution (linear resolution) is that 24MP is 22% more resolution linearly than 16MP, and 15% more than 18MP— just enough (barely) to detect. These differences are small enough that even assuming perfect focus, lens performance + anti-aliasing filter + sensor cover glass all influence sharpness by an amount that could approach or even exceed the sensor resolution differences.

Prelude

For the Sony NEX bodies (APS-C sensor), the Leica 24mm f/3.8 Elmar-M ASPH was used. The 24/3.8 is perhaps the world’s most highly corrected and best performing 24/25mm lens. It has a flat field* and very low distortion*, and is pin-sharp to the corners.
