Leica 21/3.4 @ f/4 on M9P (uncorrected)

Color Shading General Discussion

Color shading can be thought of as “color vignetting”, though the effects can be caused for different reasons.

The effect is caused by interaction with the digital sensor, but primarily with the cover glass over the digital sensor, and it is the ray angle from the exit pupil which is most responsible. The infrared blocking filter is thought to be responsible for much of the effect.

On some cameras (Leica M9), there is cyan color shading to the corners. The M9 incorporates firmware to reduce the effect as does its sibling the Leica M240. Each has its own (different) behavior, with definite color differences in the corners.
