Leica 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH

Examples: Leica 21/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH (Bristlecones)

These examples were taken with Leica 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH.

If you’d like to visit the areas shown here, consider one of my photo tours for a personalized small-group experience. The bristlecone examples on this page were all shot in the space of 45 minutes after a rare June snowstorm on June 12, 2010. Lots of similar colors and forms to be sure, but perhaps instructive as to the consistent high performance of the 21/1.4 Summilux-M.

My evaluation sample had a backfocus problem, and it also experiences some rearward focus shift, an attribute I was unaware of when taking these images (see the comparison). Accordingly, the background tends to be sharper than expected, with a slight loss of crispness in areas closer to the camera, contrary to my intentions. The effect is modest, and probably would go unnoticed to most observes, not knowing where focus had been intended. Remember, it’s matter of centering the zone of focus where desired, and with 3D subjects at f/8 one can get away with a lot, since the zone is fairly deep once one gets a bit distant from the camera. Had I known in advance, I would have biased focus slightly forward.
