A lightweight kit for hiking (original version)

This is my original December 2010 writeup. My views have now changed based on 20 months of experience, in part due to rangefinder focusing issues, but also due to the improving and important camera adjustments based on 6-bit coded lenses. I now advise only Leica M lenses except for black and white shooters.

What follows is the “keep it light and tight” kit — pick and choose a kit for your purposes. Emphasis placed on compact size and low weight and also minimal distortion, without sacrificing performance. Note that I haven’t used all of these lenses, they are just what I’d try first to see if they fit the task.

This list was prepared in advance of shooting the M9, and stands well in theory, but reality often intrudes. Please read the Focusing and Composing pages as well as the 21/4.5 Biogon issue page carefully.
