Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH (2016)

MTF

Performance is very high at center, but drops off steadily and by a considerable degree to the edges. Like its predecessor, the 28/2 Summicron-M ASPH is far from an ideal lens at f/2 for distance shots, or buildings straight-on, or groups of people: sharp center but a much less crisp mid zone and periphery.

Stopped down from f/2 to f/2.8, the performance improves moderately across the entire field which is as one would hope, but the improvement is not large, suggesting a possible slight focus shift. Going to f/5.6 delivers very high performance over most of the frame, though the area approaching frame edges and corners shows little improvement; it could be a peripheral focus shift and so field shots are warranted to explore that idea.

The MTF charts, particularly from f/2 to f/2.8 are at odds with actual results; they are not credible when real images are examined: focus shift is severe. It’s unclear how these charts can be delivered by Leica in the face of such damaging real-image evidence to the contrary.
