Leica M240
Leica 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH (2016)

Focusing Behavior in Live View vs Predecessor

According to Leica, the 28/2 (2016) offers improved flatness of field and distortion characteristics relative to its predecessor as well as improved peripheral sharpness and contrast:

Slight changes were made to the optical design (very minor changes in the lens positions) that improve the contrast and resolution performance when being used on digital cameras.

The MTF graphs in the technical data show the pure lens performance independent from the sensor or film you use, this is why you don’t see a massive improvement in the MTF curves. But if you compare new and old lens with the M, SL or Sony, you will see much better details and contrast especially in the corners.

Focus shift should be on the same level as before.

Given these statements, it seemed desirable to establish just how much better the 28mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH (2016) performs versus its predecessor. This turns out to be a harder task than it seems!
