Leica M240
Leica 90mm f/2.4 Summarit-M

Flare Series: Barn Interior (M240, 90/2.4)

This eight-image series shows how the veiling flare behavior of the Leica 90mm f/2.4 Summarit-M depends on small changes in the way non-image-forming light enters the lens and how flare can suddenly flare up (!) with only a small change in angle to a light source.

Flare series

The camera was rotated and this series of eight images was taken at f/8 with the supplied lens hood mounted. Exposure was identical for all frames, so the flare as shown is purely the result of the flare characteristics of the lens.

Observe that the same light source as image forming light (frames #1 and #2) is much less of a problem than when that same light source is just outside the frame (#4).

The serious problem is that even a bright sky causes strong veiling flare, as shown in the Mining Camp Bunkhouse example (the 90/2.4 behaves the same way). It really is unacceptable in such an expensive optic, but regrettably this type of behavior plagues most all Leica M designs.
