Leica 100mm f/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R

Introduction: 100mm f/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R

Applicability:

The Leica 100mm f/2.8 APO-Elmarit-R has been discontinued (like all Leica R lenses), but is available on the used market.

Color correction of the 100/2.8 APO is superb, and in this regard it smokes the Zeiss ZF.2 / ZE 100mm f/2 Makro-Planar.

However, the 100/2.8 APO is a full stop slower than the Zeiss 100/2 and it does have some field curvature, not offering a flat field, and this shows up especially with high resolution digital. Whereas the Zeiss 100/2 is flat field at f/2, the Leica 100/2.8 APO needs stopping down to f/5.6 or so (at least at infinity) to yield full sharpness across the frame, due to the field of sharp focus curving forward towards the edges.
