Leica 180mm f/2.8 APO-Elmarit-R

Examples: Stitched Panorama (San Francisco)

This Leica 180mm f/2.8 APO-Elmarit-R makes a superb lens for stitched panoramas.

\While it has ~1.2% pincushion distortion to the extreme corners, this is also true of most all telephotos in its range. But its ultra high contrast and resolving power make the most of scenes, especially distant ones, where atmospheric haze inherently lowers the available contrast.

When shooting panoramas, be sure to use Live View for critical focus. Shoot at f/4 or f/5.6 unless more depth of field is really needed.

Stitched Panorama — San Francisco — 316 megapixels

Shot at ~f/5.6 on the Canon 1Ds Mark III on March 30, 2008. It appears that I used a polarizer, perhaps not a good choice given the darkening at center.
