Aperture Series: Surreal Bristlecones at High Altitude, Generations (Nikon D810)

This image demands sharpness near to far from very close to the camera, and also left to right across the frame. Focus was relatively close on the large leading bristlecone, which given the slight forward field curvature of the 15/2.8 tends to favor the foreground over the background; appropriate here for this image.

Surreal Bristlecones at High Altitude, Generations

In terms of capturing the solitude, the immensity of time, the harsh reality of life at this altitude at over 11,000', I consider this image one of my finest of this area by its careful balance of content and lighting. It freezes an instant of time, one out of millennia, which is what these trees are all about: these sculpted elders are quite possibly 5000 years old or more, yet the youngsters that have sprung up to take their place could continue to grow for another 5000 years, an awesome span of time hard to even conceive in terms of a human lifetime.
