Carl Zeiss ZF.2 18mm f/3.5 Distagon T*

Compared with Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II - Mosaic

Please read the main comparisons page first, for background information.

This is a difficult comparison because the two lenses are so different, offering performance that varies across's the frame, with the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II zoom better in some places, and the ZF 18/3.5 Distagon better in others. See the crops for details. These images were made with the 21 megapixel Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III.

Exposure

The Canon 16-35 images (all apertures) needed a +1/2 stop push. The ZF 18/3.5 image at f/4 was pushed 1/2 stop, but the f/8 image was not. So it seems that once stopped down to f/8, the effective speed (“T-stop”) is significantly “faster” for the 18/3.5 Distagon.
