Carl Zeiss ZF.2 18mm f/3.5 Distagon T*

Vignetting and Color Shading vs Nikon 14-24mm

One related effect of the 18/3.5 vignetting is color shift towards the corners of the frame, also known as vignetting by color or color shading. This is very common on Leica M digital and Leica even builds in correction for it. It is caused by ray angle to the sensor; a greater angle of incidence on a digital sensor with an infrared-block filter tends to cut off red light more than other frequencies.

On the full-frame Nikon D3 as processed with Nikon Capture NX 2, there is a substantial shift to blue in the corners (this is not unlike the cyan shift seen with the Schneider 28mm f/2.8 PC Super Angulon). The shift in the a/b values (Lab mode) to {-1, -5} represents a slight cyan tinge and a substantial amount of additional blue. View the frames at each aperture and this color shift will be obvious.
