Zeiss ZF.2 21mm f/2.8 Distagon T*

vs Nikon 14-24/2.8G

I didn’t want to publish this page— I wanted a perfect comparison.

An absolutely spot-on comparison is always the goal, but when that proves elusive after days (actually weeks) of attempts, with different subjects, then the show must go on. The day this example was shot, I returned from my computer to this creek 3 times and each time could not produce a perfect comparison, focus matching eluding me each time.

Perfection is elusive

The truth is that no comparison is perfect, even comparing the same lens to itself! Substantial differences in image quality will result from very minor differences in focus using the same lens on the same subject. The variation is literally the minimum one can physically impart in turning the focus ring—that this is so needs only a brief experience in Live View mode with maximum magnification— but what is less easily observed is that no apparent change at the point of focus is nevertheless shifting the zone of sharp focus. In some sense, it’s hit-and-miss, and this is why I strive for comparisons which reveal front-to-back focus differences whenever feasible.
