How does the Zeiss 28mm f/2 Distagon fare when used for outdoor portraiture of fast-changing subjects? And for close-range portraits?
Often under-rated as a focal length and lens, the Zeiss 28/2 Distagon is a wonderful lens for environmental scenes. Its vignetting and contrast characteristics at f/2 are particularly useful in mitigating harsh sunlight. I consider it a must-own lens.
Off like jackrabbits
Stopping down the 28/2 Distagon to f/2.8 reduces vignetting and crisps up the contrast yet this still retains some of the desirable contrast and vignetting characteristics found at f/2. Even a 28mm lens still has limited depth of field, but where it’s in the zone, sharpness is impressively high on the 36 megapixel Nikon D800E.
